Lewisville's Holiday Calendar Ends Before Shallowford Road Reopens

NCDOT estimates that Shallowford Road will reopen in front of the Oaks Shopping Center at 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 18. By then, every gathering on the Town of Lewisville's holiday calendar will already be over.

The tree lighting is Dec. 4. Movie night is Dec. 11. The Lewisville Civic Club's Christmas Parade steps off on Dec. 13. All of it happens while a section of Lewisville's main road is closed for a roundabout, so getting to each event this year starts with knowing which way in is still open.

What's closed, and for how long

The Town of Lewisville posted the notice on Sept. 28. Shallowford Road is closed from the Oaks Shopping Center through just past the ABC Store, starting Monday, Sept. 28, "until further notice." The closure lets North Carolina Department of Transportation crews build a roundabout for the Great Wagon Road. Drivers are sent onto a signed US 421 detour, and the shopping center stays open through its Williams Road entrance.

That notice has no end date. NCDOT's estimate comes from two other sources. WBFJ reported on Sept. 29 that NCDOT expected the closure to last through Dec. 18, 2026. The Winston Now road closures roundup, updated Oct. 24, uses DriveNC data. It lists all lanes closed near Sunny Acres Drive until 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18, with drivers routed by Williams Road and US 421 at exit 246. Treat Dec. 18 as a target, since road work can run past its estimate.

Some background on the roundabout. In NCDOT's paperwork, the Great Wagon Road is project U-5536, contract C204980, and it runs from Shallowford Road to Lewisville-Vienna Road. Lewisville's first comprehensive plan in the 1990s called for a road parallel to Shallowford so the town would not have to widen its main street as traffic grew. The town says the contract runs to 2029 but expects the work to finish earlier. The roundabout is part of that project, so this closure is a stage in building the parallel road, not routine repair work.

The season, laid against the closure

Every town date below comes from the November–December 2026 Town of Lewisville newsletter. The last column shows where each event falls against NCDOT's Dec. 18 estimate.

Date Event Where Closure estimated in place?
Wed., Dec. 2, 1 to 5:30 p.m. Town Blood Drive Mary Alice Warren Community Center, 7632 Warren Park Drive Yes
Fri., Dec. 4, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Holiday Open House Mary Alice Warren Community Center Yes
Fri., Dec. 4, 7 p.m. Tree Lighting Ceremony Shallowford Square Yes

Sun., Dec. 13, 3 p.m. Lewisville Civic Club Christmas Parade Uptown Lewisville Yes
Dec. 21 to Jan. 5 Holiday cardboard recycling Public Works Building, 6524 Shallowford Road Estimated reopened

Only the cardboard drop-off falls after the estimated reopening. Every gathering on the town's holiday calendar takes place with the road closed.

Dec. 4 is the evening that needs a plan

The first Friday in December has the most going on. The Holiday Open House at the Mary Alice Warren Community Center runs from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with games, coloring sheets, holiday punch and hors d'oeuvres. Half an hour after it ends, the town counts down to lighting the live tree at Shallowford Square "at 7 p.m. sharp." There will be carolers, the Lewisville Civic Club serves hot chocolate and cookies, and the newsletter says Santa is expected.

It is also the first tree lighting since the new Shallowford Square playground opened on Sept. 10. Families arriving early may find the kids already busy there.

The 7 p.m. start leaves little slack, and the town has already said where Square visitors should park during construction. The Great Wagon Road project page lists three spots:

  • The Public Works Building, across Shallowford Road from the Square
  • Along Lucy Lane
  • The G. Galloway Reynolds Community Center

The town wrote that guidance with its summer events in mind, and it says construction may add "extra caution tape and safety markers" around the Square. Picking one of those three lots before you leave saves circling at 6:55. The newsletter has no separate parking instructions for the open house or movie night at the community center.

Parade Sunday adds a second set of closures

The 41st Lewisville Civic Club Christmas Parade is Sunday, Dec. 13, at 3 p.m. The Civic Club lists the start at the intersection of Shallowford and Lewisville-Vienna roads, with the route winding through Uptown. Roads into town close at 2:30 p.m. and reopen after the parade ends, at law enforcement's discretion. The town newsletter tells parade-goers to check LewisvilleNC.net and LewisvilleCivicClub.org for route updates.

That afternoon, drivers face both the parade closures and the construction closure, which NCDOT estimates will last five more days. Leaving early matters more than it usually does. Getting parked well before 2:30 is the simplest plan. Groups or businesses that want to march have until midnight on Wednesday, Dec. 9, to enter. Entry is free, and questions go to Parade Director Maureen Barton at [email protected].

Holiday errands at the Oaks Shopping Center

Holiday cooking and shopping still mean trips to Food Lion. The Lewisville store is at 6810 Shallowford Road, in the Oaks Shopping Center, the spot the town's closure notices point to. The center stays open throughout, and the way in is the Williams Road entrance. Through traffic follows the signed US 421 detour. DriveNC routes it by Williams Road and exit 246.

The same applies to the ABC Store, which sits at the far end of the closed section. Thanksgiving week and the days before Christmas Eve will likely be the busiest stretches at the Williams Road entrance.

Smaller dates around the edges

The town's own events fill the first half of December. Lewisville's churches, civic clubs and historic sites fill most of the rest of the season. All of these are listed in the newsletter's community calendar:

  • Nov. 7: Repair Café Triad, 1 to 5 p.m. at Shallowford Presbyterian Church, 1200 Lewisville-Clemmons Road, with walk-ins until 4 p.m. The Vienna Civic Club's Chicken BBQ fundraiser starts at 11 a.m. the same day.
  • Nov. 21: Unity Moravian Church's Craft & Women's Store Sale with Bake Sale, starting at 9 a.m. at 8300 Concord Church Road.
  • Dec. 5: A Victorian Christmas at the Historic Nissen House, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with donations accepted.
  • Dec. 6: Concord Methodist Church's Christmas Love Feast, 5:30 p.m. at 8955 Concord Church Road.
  • Dec. 8: Storytime with Santa at 10 a.m., from Forsyth County Public Libraries.
  • Dec. 20: Union United Methodist Church's Bluegrass Concert, 4 p.m. at 8935 Shallowford Road.

The town's MOVEmber challenge runs all month, with a goal of 50 miles or 132,000 steps. Trackers are due Dec. 2.

Here are the service changes that affect the weekly routine:

  1. No trash delay for Veterans Day on Nov. 11. Forsyth County Public Libraries are closed that day.
  2. Thanksgiving closures on Nov. 26 and 27 push Thursday and Friday trash and recycling back one day. Libraries are closed both days.
  3. The Christmas closures on Dec. 24, 25 and 28 push Friday's trash and recycling back one day. Libraries are closed Dec. 24 through 28.

After the 18th

Holiday cardboard recycling runs Dec. 21 through Jan. 5, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year it is at the new Public Works Building, 6524 Shallowford Road, not at Lewisville Elementary. Nothing is accepted on Christmas Day or New Year's Day, and the town asks residents not to leave boxes in the lot if the bin is full. The town also lists that building as a parking option for events at Shallowford Square, so anyone who parked there for the Dec. 4 tree lighting already knows the way to the cardboard bin.

Construction won't end with this roundabout. The Lewisville-Vienna Road and Robinhood Road roundabout, which started in spring 2026, has an estimated completion of spring 2027. The Moser Property Greenway at 6665 Shallowford Road has been under construction since April 2026. When it can open depends on NCDOT making the connecting Great Wagon Road sidewalks accessible to pedestrians. So getting around town will keep changing into 2027. The town posts updates on each project page at lewisvillenc.net.

Earlier this fall, our Lewisville openings roundup covered what has opened around town, and the Lewisville neighborhood page has more about the town itself.
